Subrato J. Deb, MD, is the director of thoracic surgical Oncology at the Stephenson Cancer Center and associate professor in the division of cardiothoracic surgery. In his role, he oversees the growth and development of the only comprehensive thoracic oncology program in the state of Oklahoma. He was instrumental in starting the thoracic cancers tumor board at the Stephenson Cancer Center, the only multispecialty, fully integrated tumor board dedicated to cancers of the chest in the state of Oklahoma. Currently, Dr. Deb is also working to launch Oklahoma’s only comprehensive lung cancer screening program for high-risk patients.
Dr. Deb performed the University of Oklahoma’s first minimally invasive lobectomy, minimally invasive esophagectomy, and minimally invasive thymectomy. Since his arrival, the Stephenson Cancer Center is the only center in the state to consistently offer minimally invasive esophagectomy and minimally invasive lobectomy to patients with esophageal and lung cancer, performing this complex procedure for patients across the state and region. Dr. Deb was the first surgeon to perform an extrapleural pneumonectomy for pleural tumor at the University of Oklahoma. His clinical interests include aggressive surgical treatment of thoracic malignancies and disorders of the esophagus.
Dr. Deb’s research interests are primarily clinical. He is the on site principal investigator in the CALBG 140503 trial evaluating the role of lung sparing surgery in the treatment of lung cancer. He is also involved in research pursuits through the Department of Surgery evaluating molecular profiling of lung cancer patients.
An honors graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Deb is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Dr. Deb completed his residency in general surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD and then completed a research fellowship at the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine in Bethesda, MD. After residency, he pursued training in thoracic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, emphasizing thoracic oncology. He received the OT Clagett Award during his training at the Mayo Clinic. After completion of his training, Dr. Deb served in the United States Navy as a cardiothoracic surgeon and retired from military service in 2013.
Dr. Deb is board certified in both general surgery and thoracic surgery. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the Society of Surgical Oncology.
